Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, that is. His legacy is a 135,000 hectare wildlife reserve in Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula (Australia), which “is home to a set of important spring fed wetlands which provide a critical water source to threatened habitat, provide permanent flow of water to the Wenlock River, and is home to rare and vulnerable plants and wildlife”.

However, Cape Alumina Pty. Ltd., have put in applications to mine “the head waters of irreplaceable waterways and unique biodiversity which will not recover after mining operations are finished”, which is projected to take ten years, according to SIWR. Steve’s widow, Terri, has started a petition to help save SIWR, which was purchased by the Australian government last year and named, in tribute, after Mr. Irwin.

Anyone interested in signing the petition care follow the link below.
